12. M. V. Alpatov - Frescoes of the Church of the Assumption at Volotovo Polye

The book "Frescoes of the Church of the Assumption at Volotovo Polye" contains a detailed analysis of a cycle of fourteen-century Novgorod murals which were destroyed during the Second World War by the nazi invaders. The author of the text is a well-known Soviet historian of art, M. V. Alpatov. The book is illustrated with unique photographs made by the pioneer of scientific study of the frescoes, L. A. Matsulevich. An idea of the colour system of the cycle is given by coloured copies executed by E. P. Sachavets-Fedorovits and N. I. Tolmachevskaya. The arrangement of the frescoes in the church is shown in special schemes. These materials were originally intended for research purposes, but now, when the monument has been irrevocably lost, they constitute practically all that is left of it to posterity. In the present edition they are published in a more complete form than ever before. The text of the English translation is printed in parallel with the Russian original.

Книга «Фрески церкви Успения на Волотовом поле» посвящена замечательному циклу новгородских росписей XIV века, разрушенных фашистскими оккупантами в годы Великой Отечественной войны. Наряду с обстотельным очерком известного искусствоведа М. В. Алпатова в книгу включены униуальные фотографии первого исследователя волотовских росписей Л. А. Мацулевича, воспроизводящие наиьолее выразительные детали фресок; светные копии Е. П. Сачавец-Федорович, Н. И. Толмачевской, воссоздающие их колористический строй; схемы росписи, показывающие порядок их расположения. Истодненные в свое время в научных целях, они дают теперь единственную возможность составить представление об утраченном памятнике и впервые широко публикуются в настоящем издании. Текст в книге печатается параллельно на русском и английском языках.
